Karité Delapointe

Our Fairtrade Story

Karité Delapointe dates back to 2002, when we launched a project to import our first 500 kg of shea butter, to help the first cooperative of women in Léo, Burkina Faso. Since then, nearly 40,000 tons of organic and fair trade shea butter have been imported by Delapointe to make natural products without any chemical preservatives. And more than 5,000 Burkinabe women are now involved in the group with which we partner.

You don’t do business, you change lives!

– Chef Adam Tampuri, President of Fairtrade Africa while visiting Karité Delapointe in 2014 at Bury, Estrie, Québec, Canada.

True to our fair trade mission, Karité Delapointe is determined to use the highest possible amounts of shea butter in all its products, sometimes at the expense of profits, as is the case of our soap which contains 45 grams of shea butter in each bar. "What this means is, the more shea butter we import the more we improve the lives of African women and their families. It was my first mission and it will always be that way."

Why should consumers choose our Fairtrade Certified products?

Karité Delapointe’s superior quality shea butter has a variety of uses. It is rich in vitamins A, D, E, F and K, and is a natural anti-inflammatory. It is the main ingredient of body and face balms, anti-cracking lip balms and hyper-moisturizing soaps.

Praxède Lévesque Lapointe, who was named Farmer of the Year in Québec in 2011, has always put her mission at the heart of her business. Examples such as helping orphans and sending maple syrup filters to simplify shea butter production are at the heart and soul of her fair trade business.

Karité Delapointe was also rewarded in 2016 for its association with the Oxfam-Québec Magasin du Monde. Praxède is actively involved in educating students and interns about the principles of fair trade and solidarity by sharing her story and offering special fundraising campaigns.

Karité Delapointe is still to this day the only importer of certified Fairtrade shea butter in Canada and has distribution points worldwide for its bulk products.
