Becoming Fair Trade designated requires bringing together groups of engaged and knowledgeable members from a school’s community to ensure that fair trade and Fairtrade certified products are incorporated into a school’s activities and throughout the year.
How to get started
Any Canadian school can be designated Fair Trade if they meet all the criteria within these four requirements:
- Steering Committee: a Committee must be formed of a combination of students, teachers and administrators to meet regularly to achieve designation and plan for continued participation
- Classroom Instruction: the issues of fair trade must be incorporated into the classroom curriculum that includes learning activities and opportunities for discussion and engagement
- Product Availability: Fairtrade certified products must be made available throughout the school year to students and staff
- Visibility and Engagement: create events or activities to educate and make the commitment to fair trade visible to students and staff
These resource materials will give you what you need to kick off the Fair Trade School Program with students, staff and administration. The Action Guide will provide step by step instructions on to plan your activities and work towards designation.
