In a series of blog posts, we are pleased to be showcasing the winners of the 2016 Canadian Fairtrade Awards. The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals.

The 2016 Excellence in Consumer Education winner is Engineers without Borders, University of Regina Chapter. They have carried out significant educational initiatives aimed at explaining the importance and impact of consumer habits though the purchase of Fairtrade certified products.

Here are more details about why EWB, University of Regina chapter won the Excellence in Consumer Education award:

  • During Fair Trade Campus Week, an opening ceremony was held with different faculty administrators and departments of the university speaking about how Fairtrade is important both on campus and in the Global South.
  • Educational resources were widely distributed on campus and they were very active on social media. Amongst the events held were a fair trade cookie challenge, a vegan fair trade brownie giveaway, and a Fairtrade wine and beer night.
  • They challenged the campus food service representative to start by educating their workers about the Fairtrade items they already sell.
  • They educated people on how to find Fairtrade certified products in local stores and coffee shops.

"We are very proud to have received this award, as it serves as proof of our hard work in educating people about Fair Trade. We will use this as leverage and continue our journey in becoming a Fair Trade campus, hopefully in the near future."
