Discovery Organics
by Ian Brown, Fairtrade Canada

In a series of blog posts, we are pleased to be showcasing the winners of the 2016 Canadian Fairtrade Awards. The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals.

Traders import products from Fairtrade certified producers to sell on to customers across Canada. The 2016 Trader of the Year Award was given to Discovery Organics. Based in Vancouver since 2008, Discovery Organics imports Fairtrade bananas, mangoes, avocadoes and various other fruits and vegetables. Co-owner Randy Hooper also received this year’s award for Fairtrade All-Star.

Here are some details about why Discovery Organics won the Trader of the Year award:

  • Discovery Organics maintains long-term relationships with a number of producer groups in countries such as Peru, Mexico and Ecuador, and makes frequent visits to their farms.
  • They are in the process of helping two vegetable producers in Central Mexico to become Fairtrade certified, in addition to a variety of other new partnerships and projects.
  • Discovery Organics launched a ‘Rebel Food’ program which sells fruits and vegetables considered ‘unattractive’. This has created a market for produce that farmers otherwise might not be able to sell, while giving more consumers access to fair trade and organic produce.
  • Twice-weekly market reports which include producer stories are sent to customers to help educate them about Fairtrade.

“Being a Fairtrade certified trader is not just a better way of doing business, it is a way to contribute to the resilience of farming communities.”
