Chartwells – Excellence in Public Outreach

by Ian Brown, Fairtrade Canada

In a series of blog posts, we are pleased to be showcasing the winners of the 2016 Canadian Fairtrade Awards. The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals.

The 2016 Excellence in Public Outreach winner is Chartwells. They have supported fair trade on a national scale by increasing their procurement of Fairtrade products – staff collaborate across all levels and departments to build a business case that results in incorporating more certified products into the purchasing system.

  • They have also provided education and awareness to their customers on what the movement works to achieve. Chartwells has promoted Fairtrade through many events and activities on their campuses, such as blind taste tests, prize contests, trivia quizzes, product samples, and cooking lessons led by their chefs using Fairtrade ingredients.
  • Promotional materials (provided by Fairtrade Canada) were displayed widely to build awareness of the benefits producers receive by being part of the Fairtrade system.
  • Chartwells challenges their campuses to send in the results of their Fair Trade Campus Week activities to the Manager of Engagement and Sustainability.  That is an additional way that they communicate on fair trade to the rest of the company.  The campus selected as the most engaging and successful campaign team is featured in the Food Service bulletin that is received by all of Compass Group Canada staff, and in the winter Chartwells Stories Newsletter that goes out to the public.

“Having this recognition helps to confirm our commitment to being leaders in advocacy for food production and will serve to strengthen our efforts to increase Fairtrade purchasing on our campuses. We will make every effort possible to support a system that resonates at a basic human level.”
