In a series of blog posts, we are pleased to be showcasing the winners of the 2016 Canadian Fairtrade Awards. The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals.

With more than 200 licensees across the country, competition was fierce in this category. After careful consideration of the applications received, our panel of independent judges selected Ethical Bean Coffee as 2016’s Licensee of the Year. Ethical Bean Coffee worked diligently throughout the year to help grow Fairtrade communities by adding new products to their offerings, expanding their retail distribution across North America and internationally, and integrating the Fairtrade message and values into their communications.

Here are some further details about why Ethical Bean Coffee won the Licensee of the Year award:

  • 100% of Ethical Bean’s coffees have been certified Fairtrade since the company was founded in 2003. They also sell other Fairtrade products to their food service customers.
  • Ethical Bean runs regular in-store product samplings and demonstrations, with their Fairtrade certification being a key talking point to consumers.
  • Fairtrade messaging is also a frequent part of their print advertising, social media and other online campaigns, as well as at events in communities and campuses across the country. An orientation on Fairtrade is part of the training for new employees.
  • Ethical Bean was an active participant in Fairtrade Canada campaigns such as Fairtrade Month and the World Fairtrade Challenge.

“In a world where we’re seeing increasing consolidation of our food systems and suppliers, growing global income inequality, and turbulence in our countries and governments, it’s more important than ever that businesses take a leadership role in helping to create a sustainable future,” said Lloyd Bernhardt, Ethical Bean Coffee Co-founder and CEO.  “We are honoured to be recognized for our work and commitment to Fairtrade.”
