Camino 88% Intensely Dark – 2017 Product of the Year

by Ian Brown, Fairtrade Canada

Concluding our series of posts looking at the winners of last year's Canadian Fairtrade Awards, today we’re looking at Camino’s 88% Intensely Dark chocolate bar – the 2017 Fairtrade Product of the Year.

With thousands of Fairtrade products on the market in Canada, to be named Product of the Year by our panel of independent judges is quite an achievement. Some highlights of Camino’s application:

  • The 88% Intensely Dark bar was created in response to consumer demand for bars with higher content. 88% of pure premium cocoa with just a touch of sugar and vanilla, the bar is 100% Fairtrade and organic.
  • The 88% bar allows more purchases of cocoa from small-scale farmers, which means a better income, better standards of living, and above market earnings supported by Fairtrade Premiums.
  • The bar is sold at a wide range of national chains and independent local retailers, with a significant increase in listings and sales during the qualifying period for the Award.
  • The bar was promoted with social media giveaways, in-store demonstrations, advertising and special promotions for Fairtrade Month in May.

The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals. The 2018 Awards will be presented in Ottawa on March 2, 2019.
