Alter Eco
by Ian Brown, Fairtrade Canada

Continuing our series of posts looking at the winners of the 2017 Canadian Fairtrade Awards, today we’re looking at Alter Eco – winner of the 2017 New Product of the Year.

This was one of the most hotly-contested Award categories, with many excellent new Fairtrade certified products hitting the market during the qualifying period. Our panel of independent judges decided that Alter Eco’s dark chocolate brand extension, including the Salted Almonds bar and the Salt & Malt bar, was the best of the applications received. Some highlights of their submission:

  • The new bars feature high quality Fairtrade cocoa from Ecuador with a sprinkle of Fleur de Sel de Guérande sea salt.
  • The new products stay true to Alter Eco’s steadfast dedication to full-circle sustainability throughout their operations and supply chain. All of the company’s staff participate in ongoing training on sustainability issues, and make regular visits to producers in the Global South.
  • The packaging of the bars is used for consumer education, with stories of how farmers benefit from Fairtrade and how they’re replanting the rainforest.
  • The bars have been successful at retail, featuring on the shelves of many national, regional and local stores. Alter Eco supported the launch with in-store promotions and extensive online engagement.

“It’s a great honor to win an award that emphasizes our commitment to the highest quality and newest innovations in chocolate, while also bringing awareness around our ongoing mission for fair compensation to the communities that grow our organic, clean ingredients. We thank Fairtrade Canada for supporting Alter Eco with this award and for helping to educate consumers around the importance of buying Fairtrade”. - Edouard Rollet, Co Founder + Co CEO
