Ethical Bean

Our Fairtrade Story

Ethical BeanIn 1999, Lloyd Bernhardt and Kim Schachte, co-founders of Ethical Bean Coffee, took a trip that changed their lives. A journey to Guatemala to adopt their daughter sparked a passion for the culture of the country and inspired a desire to better the lives of the farmers and families living and working in the coffee industry. The couple returned to Vancouver and in 2003 launched Ethical Bean Coffee.

Working with Fairtrade Canada is ideal as it is a trusted and independently monitored certification body.

Ethical Bean has been working with Fairtrade Canada since the company's inception, over 13 years ago. We collaborate through partnering on educational events, supporting Fairtrade Campuses and their Fairtrade Canada events, partnering through social media initiatives and other unique activities.

Why should consumers choose our Fairtrade Certified products?

Ethical BeanWe value transparency at Ethical Bean and help connect coffee lovers to the farmers behind each unique bag of coffee. Consumers can scan their bag’s QR code to trace the coffee’s journey from crop to cup, Google Map each bag down to the exact field they were grown in, watch interviews with farmers, look up cupping notes, roast profiles, and more.

At Ethical Bean, we believe that when it comes to sustainability initiatives, third party verification is the gold standard. There is so much confusion with “green-washing” in the consumer marketplace that third party verified certifications add a lot of value. Working with Fairtrade Canada is ideal as it is a trusted and independently monitored certification body.
