December 2016 - FAIRTRADE SUGAR, SPICES AND BAKING GOODS

Every month Fairtrade Canada puts the spotlight on one or more Fairtrade certified product categories. This December, as winter gets underway, we’re looking forward to filling our homes with the delicious scents of freshly baked holiday goodies made using Fairtrade certified sugar, herbs, spices and other baking goods. Whether you’re making treats for your family gatherings, or dishes to bring to office potlucks, look for the FAIRTRADE Mark when shopping to be sure that your sweet and savoury ingredients make a difference to farmers and workers who are marginalized by trade.

Fairtrade certified sugar is available in many grocery stores across the country. A wide range of Fairtrade herbs and spices can be found in national retailers and many local specialty shops – including vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, pepper and turmeric. When planning more decadent treats, don’t forget to pick up Fairtrade certified cocoa, baking chocolate and chocolate chips.

About Fairtrade Sugar

Focusing on sugar, there are 62,700 Fairtrade farmers and workers in 19 countries, represented by 99 producer organizations. Sugar farmers invest more than half of their Fairtrade Premiums in the running and improvement of their producer organizations. Changes to EU agricultural policy which come into effect in 2017 will have a significant negative impact on cane sugar producers in the least developed countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Fairtrade is actively supporting sugar producers as this change approaches, seeking new markets for their products.
