Position: Communications Coordinator
Organization: TransFair Canada (www.transfair.ca)
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
TransFair Canada, the national certifier of Fair Trade products, is a small non-profit with a big job.
We’re looking for a natural communicator to bolster our communications while keeping us hip and relevant.
The Place
This position requires someone to work with our communications team from our office in Ottawa. There may be the occasional bit of travel too.
The Role
This is a key role within TransFair Canada, responsible not only for communicating information outward, but listening and bringing information into the organization as well.
You’ll play a supportive role to TransFair Canada’s overall community and media engagement efforts, developing and maintaining the tools necessary to engage and educate about Fair Trade, Fair Trade Certification, and TransFair Canada, as well as ensuring communications consistency across the organization.
In this position you will:
- Manage our website in collaboration with the entire Communications Department, with particular attention to keeping things fresh and lively;
- Manage our existing social media tools and help make our efforts even more effective;
- Strengthen our relationships with community groups and related organizations, working with them to increase understanding of Fair Trade in Canada and opportunities to expand it;
- Manage some of our current outreach campaigns and programs, and develop new and exciting ones too;
- Assist with the development and distribution of Fair Trade promotional materials, from creative design to distribution;
- Answer questions from the public about Fair Trade, Fair Trade certification, and TransFair Canada.

What we need:
- A lover of the English language, capable of writing in different styles with personality and creativity,while conveying complex ideas in an understandable way;
- Fluency in French; other languages considered an asset
- Someone who is passionate about the world and possesses a strong commitment to justice;
- Someone with a high degree of personal integrity who brings the same standard to communications;
- A creative spark combined with an organized thinker;
- A self-starter who can also be a strong team player;
- A friendly person who is a pleasure to work with.
Other things we’d love to see:
- Knowledge of Fair Trade, international development, and related global issues;
- An experienced and dynamic communicator who feels comfortable presenting to a crowd and speaking to media;
- Experience with social media and writing for websites;
- A background in multimedia, including graphic design and video;
- Established networks in Canadian media and civil society.
