Selling Fairtrade Certified Products in the USA

At the end of 2011, Fair Trade USA (FTUSA) withdrew its membership from Fairtrade International (FLO), so is no longer representing the international Fairtrade system in the United States. Companies in the USA are encouraged to stay within the FLO Fairtrade system to benefit from being part of a strong international system of standards and certification, governed by ISEAL’s standard setting code, and from the power of a globally recognized FAIRTRADE Certification Mark.

Companies registered with Fairtrade Canada may be suspended for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Failure to report transactions involving Fairtrade certified products
  • Failure to correct issues identified in a certification audit by an agreed upon deadline
  • Failure to correct issues related to misuse of a Fairtrade certification mark
  • Delinquency of fee payment

Suspension means a company is not allowed to enter into new contracts for Fairtrade certified products but may fulfill existing contracts.
