Continuing our series of posts looking at the winners of last year's Canadian Fairtrade Awards, today we’re looking at Choices Markets – winner of the 2017 Retailer of the Year award.
After being a strong contender for this award in 2016, Choices Markets commitment to Fairtrade went even further in 2017 and convinced our panel of independent judges that this year they should take home the trophy. Some highlights of their application:
- Each of the 11 Choices Markets stores carries more than 300 Fairtrade certified products, including their own Earth’s Choice chocolate and coffee. They expand their Fairtrade range every year. Produce is also an important category, and recently they have improved their product origin signs so that customers will know where their Fairtrade bananas and other fruit come from.
- A major promotion during Fairtrade Month in May saw the chain raise funds for Peruvian farmers affected by devastating floods. Activated through social media and print promotions, and with an internal display contest between stores, $3000 was collected which was matched by partner Discovery Organics.
- Fairtrade products and initiatives are featured in Choices’ email campaigns, newsletters, flyers, nutrition tours, seminars and more.
- Every new staff member receives an orientation which includes details about Fairtrade products and the benefits received by farmers and workers.
The Canadian Fairtrade Awards recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters and are an opportunity to celebrate all of the great work done in the year by businesses, organizations and individuals. The winners of the 2018 Awards will be announced in Ottawa on March 2nd, 2019.
